Today I met with the Toy librarians I have trained for Letcee’s 5 toy libraries. What special ladies they are! Nokuphiwa, Nelly, Thando, Zanele and Mamsy all love children and provide and facilitate PLAY opportunities for the children of Mbuba, Njengabantu, Eshane and Matimatolo. The toy libraries in each community and the mobile Toy library are a sanctuary and safe place for children of all ages, to spend time playing. They can choose their play materials and receive unconditional love and affirmation from the toy librarians.
I so enjoyed hearing the report backs from each of them and the stories that bring joy to my heart. Thando shared that one of the little boys who comes to the Eshane toy library regularly, had told his Great Grandfather that the toy library had chess. The next day a very elderly man with a stick came slowly to the toy library and shared what his great grandson had told him. He was excited that the children in the community had access to such games. He proceeded to spend 2 hours teaching several children how to play chess. What a lovely example of multi -generational play.
It appears that the toy libraries are really reaching out to the needs of school children as well. The children thrive on the attention they receive from the toy librarian, and love to come and play games after school. Given the large classes in most schools, I’m sure this is of great benefit to many
