Smart start is an early learning social franchise, with a network of trained and licensed practitioners who implement the same evidence-based programme. SmartStart was established in May 2015 to create access to early learning for three and four-year-old. Since then, they have provide an effective and affordable solution that enables unemployed women and men to run their own Smartstart programme. Smart start’s mission is to give every child the power to succeed.

The LETCEE Smartstart department has been on the rise since it was first launched in 2015. We were one of the first franchisors to pilot the programme. Through dedication, commitment, and innovation the LETCEE’s club coaches, Nomcebo and Fezeka, were awarded the title, best coaches of the year 2017/18. Since then, we have been acknowledged for best supporting organization to other franchisors, solve problems, and the ability to take on challenges. Being a good Smartstart coach requires you to be supportive, encouraging and present and being prepared to work long hours. Our Smartstart team has maintained a good relationship with community leaders and caregivers. ‘’Full tummies mean active bodies and brains”, says Nomcebo Sithole. Nutrition is a vital part of early development. It is for this reason that every child in the Smartstart playgroups receives a bowl of fortified porridge at every play session. Smartstart programme has brought change to the children in the communities in the Umzinyathi and Uthukela districts, who do not access ECD services. The franchisees are trained to run playgroups as their own bussineses. Our coaches have been impressed by the quality of programmes being delivered by franchisees who have recently completed their training.

Nomcebo Sithole the Smartstart Lead says, “I am very proud of my team’s accomplishments. They worked with dedication, commitment, and collaboration in putting the needs of children first at all times’’.
