Play-able pickup

The Play-Able Pickup is a toy library specifically serving children with disabilities and their families.

The trained toy librarian runs various programmes during the week. These include:
• Family and community education on the causes of disability.
• Caregiver training on developmental stimulation and the use of appropriate toys.
• Home visits with other community stakeholders (e.g. CCG's)
• Playgroups for children with and without disabilities.
• Accompanying children and their caregivers to rehabilitation appointments at their local clinics.
• Assisting caregivers with the implementation of therapeutic home programmes.
• Lending toys to families to continue play and stimulation at home.

This programme is currently running in two of our communities: Mbuba and Matimatolo

This project, the learnings and progress have been shared on an international platform. Annika Savage presented our work at the first Africa Play Conference in February 2019 as well as at the International Toy Library Conference in July 2019.

LETCEE, the Mbuba and Matimatolo communities are grateful to the Ken Collins Charitable Trust and Grindrod Family Centenary Trust who fund and support this project.
